Is Adeslas accepted for the Non-Lucrative Visa?
One of the most common questions we receive from clients applying for a Spanish Non-Lucrative Visa is whether Adeslas health insurance meets the requirements set by Spanish immigration authorities.
The Adeslas Completa Visa & Residency policy has been specifically designed for visa and residency applications in Spain and is commonly used by applicants who need comprehensive private medical insurance for immigration purposes.
The policy provides healthcare cover in Spain and includes hospitalisation, specialist treatment, diagnostic testing and primary healthcare services through Adeslas’ extensive provider network.
As requirements can vary between Spanish Consulates and Embassies, we always recommend confirming your individual circumstances before purchasing any health insurance policy.
If you are applying for a Non-Lucrative Visa, Digital Nomad Visa, Student Visa or another form of Spanish residency, we can advise whether Adeslas is likely to be suitable for your application.
For a full overview of what any NLV health insurance policy must include, see our Non-Lucrative Visa health insurance guide.
What does the policy cover?
The Adeslas Completa for Visa & Residency is designed to provide comprehensive private healthcare cover in Spain.
Benefits typically include:
- GP consultations
- Specialist consultations
- Diagnostic tests and scans
- Hospitalisation
- Surgery
- Emergency treatment
- Cancer treatment
- Access to private hospitals and clinics
- Nursing and rehabilitation services where medically necessary
The exact scope of cover is defined by the policy conditions in force at the time of issue.
Unlike travel insurance, this is a Spanish private health insurance policy intended to provide ongoing access to healthcare while living in Spain.
For visa applicants, one of the key advantages is that the policy is designed to satisfy immigration requirements while also providing access to a broad range of private medical services after arrival in Spain.
Waiting periods
Many standard Spanish health insurance policies contain waiting periods, known in Spain as “carencias”, before certain treatments become available.
However, the Adeslas Visa & Residency version of the policy is issued without waiting periods.
This means eligible policyholders can access covered medical services from the start date of the policy rather than waiting several months before specific benefits become available.
This feature is particularly important for residency applicants because many Spanish Consulates expect health insurance to provide immediate access to healthcare from the date cover begins.
Although standard Adeslas products may contain waiting periods for certain treatments, the Visa & Residency version arranged for immigration purposes is specifically designed to avoid this issue.
For more background on how waiting periods work and why they matter for your visa application, see our waiting periods guide.

Pre-existing conditions
As with most Spanish health insurance providers, Adeslas requires applicants to complete a medical questionnaire before cover can be approved.
The insurer uses this information to assess each application individually.
Having a pre-existing medical condition does not automatically mean an application will be declined. In some cases, additional medical information may be requested before a decision is made.
Every application is considered on its own merits, and outcomes will depend on factors such as the nature of the condition, current treatment and overall medical history.
For this reason, it is important to answer all medical questions accurately and completely during the application process.

The medical network
One of Adeslas’ strongest features is the size of its medical network.
Policyholders have access to thousands of healthcare professionals and medical facilities throughout Spain, including:
- General practitioners
- Medical specialists
- Diagnostic centres
- Private clinics
- Day surgery units
- Private hospitals
For many expatriates moving to Spain, the breadth of the Adeslas network is one of the main reasons they choose the insurer.
The network extends across major cities and smaller towns throughout the country, helping policyholders access private healthcare wherever they choose to live.
Before taking out a policy, we are happy to discuss the availability of doctors and hospitals in your specific area.
Using the policy day to day — the Adeslas mobile phone app
Managing your healthcare in Spain is considerably easier with the Adeslas mobile application. In fact it is almost essential. While authorisations can be done by phone , if language is a barrier then being able to use the mobile phone app becomes very important.
The app allows policyholders to:
- Search for doctors and specialists
- Locate nearby hospitals and clinics
- Access digital policy documentation and card
- Arrange appointments with participating providers
- Manage healthcare services from a smartphone or tablet
Digital services continue to evolve, and functionality may change over time, but the app remains an important tool for managing healthcare access.

Renewal and cancellation
The Adeslas Visa & Residency policy is an annual contract that renews automatically unless cancelled in accordance with the policy conditions.
As with most Spanish private health insurance policies, renewal premiums may change over time due to factors such as age, healthcare inflation and changes in medical costs.
If you decide not to renew your policy, notice must normally be provided before the renewal date in accordance with Spanish insurance regulations.
If you later decide to move to another insurer, it is generally advisable to arrange replacement cover before cancelling an existing policy to avoid any gap in health insurance protection.
We regularly assist clients with renewals, policy reviews and insurer changes where appropriate.
