Private health insurance in Spain for US citizens

As a US citizen, you will already be familiar with private health insurance. Many European countries, including Spain, have a national health system that is free at the point of access for those paying into the tax system. Even though most Spanish people enjoy this benefit many people also opt to buy private health insurance as well.

Sometimes the state system can be slow. Long waiting lists and a shortage of medical staff are some of the problems faced in the state system in some areas of Spain.

If you are a US citizen looking to reside in Spain then you are probably looking at obtaining a non-working residence visa or golden visa to do so. Another alternative might be as a family member of an EU national.

If any of the above then you will need to obtain a suitable private health insurance policy in Spain for a US citizen. These policies must meet certain criteria to be accepted as part of your Spanish non-working residence visa or golden visa application.

Private health insurance in Spain for US citizens should meet certain criteria:

  • The policy must be a private health insurance without any co-payment
  • You must pay the premium annually and upfront
  • The private health insurance policy in Spain should provide sufficient cover for your time in Spain as to satisfy the Spanish authorities
  • The policy should have no grace period*
  • The policy should include repatriation cover.

If you do not obtain the correct level of coverage then the Spanish authorities will decline your visa application.

*A few Spanish Consulates and Embassies do not insist on this aspect. However, we recommend taking a policy with no grace period to avoid possible complications. Also if the premium is competitive surely it is better to have full coverage from day one?
